Cedar gives steel string instruments a warm fuzzy characteristic that is great for finger style players. Up close its got balance and clarity to your ear. It does not project as loud as some of the spruce tops, but the sustain and bright color it gives to the compositions is delightful.
The redcedar we use is harvested locally from Rathdrum mountain in north Idaho. It is from property a friend owns and has alpine timber, including this old growth tree that was hewn down many years ago. Occasionally it has contrasting lighter colors in the quarter sawn cuts towards the outer rings of the tree that blend into the more natural brown that is typical of redcedar.
