The finishing process at Tonedevil Guitars and Harp Guitars is an ongoing process. The method we are currently using is called UV Cure, as you can see on the left, once a coat is applied, we expose it to high intensity UV light (like on a tanning bed, but stronger) which immediately hardens the coat you just applied.
On the right you can see Tone applying the first coat, which is actually a sealer that prevents the oils and moisture coming out of the wood as you treat it with the light. All in a days work, we can apply about 1 coat per hour, including the sanding and scuffing in between every coat.
We are getting better at doing this process with every instrument that goes through it, however we may possibly look at other types of varnishes/lacquers that may save us some handling time and elbow grease yielding the same quality requirements. But for now, sun tanning a harp guitar works pretty good and polishes up very nice!
